PHNOM PENH, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) — The five Singaporean students on the race boat which capsized Friday in the Tonle Sap River of Cambodia are still missing, local police said Saturday. Phnom Penh Police Commander Touch Naroath told Xinhua that the five Singaporeans are still missing.
Police source on Saturday morning said that one body was retrieved, but later denied it.
Eight experts from the Singaporean naval diving unit arrived at the scene Saturday and started searching for the five missing.
Ray Sonlim, head of the diving unit, said that the dark is a big problem for the search so they paused at night and will continue on Sunday morning.
The relatives of the missing racers have also arrived.
The race boat with a crew of 22 people capsized at about 6:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT) on Friday at the Phnom Penh Port, as Cambodia conducted its annual celebration of the Water Festival.
The total number of participating boats of the traditional race stood at 432, including nine boats represented each of the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, with the exception of Myanmar.
The race is expected to end on Sunday.
